The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G adheres to classic design thematics and, in our view, is one of the most elegantly designed phones available under Rs 30,000. Its rear panel is made of polycarbonate and has a smooth matte finish that feels great to the touch. We received the Olive Green colour variant for review and were impressed by its aesthetics. Despite having a large 6.7-inch display and a 5,000 mAh battery, the phone is incredibly lightweight and slim, weighing only 176g and measuring just 7.4mm in thickness. This is a significant departure from its predecessor’s bulky and heavy design. The front design features a hole punch display and slim bezels on the sides, inspired by some of the latest M series phones, with a slightly thicker chin. While the Galaxy M53 5G looks respectable, we believe Samsung could have experimented a bit more with the design, as the company played it safe in this aspect.

The viewing experience offered by the Galaxy M53 5G is truly impressive. Similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy M52 5G, this phone boasts a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. Despite the tiny hole punch at the top for the selfie camera, it never appears as a distraction.
By default, the phone offers a 120hz screen refresh rate, which can be reset to standard if needed. However, it’s worth noting that a higher refresh rate will drain the battery faster, compared to say 90hz. While a battery saver mode is available to help when the phone is running on a higher refresh rate, it may not make much of a difference. Ultimately, the 120hz refresh rate offers faster and smoother scrolling, although the difference may not be very noticeable when in standard mode.
Performance of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G stands out with its MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC, an unexpected choice for Samsung’s M series phones. Nonetheless, this processor delivers balanced performance for daily use, making the switch from the Snapdragon 778G processor in the M52 a non-issue. The device runs on Android 12 and comes with Samsung’s One UI 4.1, providing a user-friendly interface that’s easy on the eyes.
Samsung has impressed with their commitment to supporting the M53 5G, promising two years of Android updates and an impressive four years of security updates, which is fantastic for a mid-range phone. However, while One UI comes loaded with a suite of useful features, it also includes a slew of pre-installed third-party apps that users may never use. It’s worth noting that while these apps can be uninstalled, it’s an unnecessary hassle that detracts from the user experience.

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G comes with an impressive quad-camera setup on its rear, featuring a 108-megapixel primary camera, 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, 2-megapixel macro lens, and 2-megapixel depth lens. Its direct competitor, the Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G, also offers a similar camera configuration, giving consumers a tough choice to make.
As for the selfie camera, the results are somewhat mixed. The 32-megapixel front-facing shooter defaults to capturing pixel-binned 8-megapixel photos. In well-lit conditions, selfies appear sharp with accurate colors and fine details. However, low-light photography proves to be a challenge, with images turning out blurry and subpar. On the upside, the front camera is capable of producing decent portrait shots, aided by commendable edge detection.

For those who have a soft spot for Samsung, the Galaxy M53 5G is definitely worth considering based on their budget. However, if you’re in the market for a phone with exceptional camera capabilities, the Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G might be the way to go. While the Galaxy M53 5G provides solid performance, serious gamers may find the Realme GT 5G to be a more practical choice at its price range.
